People
Organize with tags
Label people with tags and custom attributes so you can find them again and send them announcements as a group.
Tags are your own labels on people in Audience → People. They cost nothing to add, they're never shown to the person, and every tag you use turns into an audience you can send an announcement to.
When to use this
- You want to group people by where you met them:
retreat-2026,bali-workshop. - You want to mark where a list came from:
kajabi-import,newsletter-2024. - You want to flag people for follow-up:
vip,wants-1-1,scholarship. - You want to store a detail Soul doesn't have a field for, such as an Instagram handle or a referral, as a custom attribute.
Ways to tag people
| When | Where |
|---|---|
| Adding one lead | Add/Invite → Add leads → Single Lead → Tags, comma-separated. See Add a contact. |
| Adding one customer | Add/Invite → Add customers → Tags, comma-separated. |
| Importing a list | Bulk Leads → Tags (applies to all leads). See Import your contacts. |
| Anyone, any time | On their profile, ⋯ → Edit Source & Tags. |
Add or remove tags on one person
Open their profile
In Audience → People, click the person.
Open Source & Tags
Click ⋯ → Edit Source & Tags. "View the acquisition source and update tags."
Add a tag
Type it in "Add a tag" and press Enter or click Add. Repeat for more.

Custom attributes
In the same Source & Tags window, Custom Attributes stores any extra details as pairs of Key and Value, such as Key "Instagram" and Value "@sarah.moves", or Key "Referred by" and Value "Maya". Click Add Attribute for each one, the × to remove one, then Save Changes.
Custom attributes are for your own reference: you see them when you open Edit Source & Tags again. They aren't shown elsewhere on the profile or in exports, and you can't filter or segment by them. Use a tag when you want to find a group.
Use your tags
- Find them: People → Filter → Tag, then type the tag exactly. See Find and filter people.
- Message them: every tag appears as "People tagged [tag]" under Send to in an announcement. See Reach people from your list.
- Export them: filter by the tag, then Export CSV. The Tags column lists each person's tags.
Good to know
- Tags are exact.
VIP,vipandVipare three different tags, both in the filter and in announcements. Pick lower case and stick to it. - A tag needs at least 2 characters.
- There's no bulk tagging of people already in your list. Tag a group as you import it, or tag people one by one.
- Adding or importing someone who's already in People replaces their tags with the new ones. See Duplicates.
- Source can't be changed. It's shown in Source & Tags for reference only.
- Members never see your tags or custom attributes.
