Turn on the Recommendations section, place it among your other sections, and see what members see.

Saving a recommendation doesn't put it on your portal by itself. The Recommendations section does that, and you decide where it sits and who sees it.

When to use this

  • You've added recommendations and they aren't on your portal yet.
  • You want recommendations higher (or lower) on your portal home.
  • You want the whole section for subscribers only, or for visitors only.

Turn the section on

Open the portal editor

Go to My Portal → Design and open the Sections tab.

Switch on Recommendations

Find Recommendations in the list and switch it on. Sections save automatically: you'll see "Saving…" then "Saved".

Place it

Drag Recommendations to where you want it among your other sections. Your portal home follows this order.

Choose who sees the section

Under the section, choose Public & Subscribers, Subscribers Only or Public Only.

Check it

Switch the Live Preview to Preview and look at your portal as a visitor and as a subscriber.

What members see

WhereWhat shows
Your portal homeA Recommendations row with up to four cards marked Recommended (image, title and the start of your note), and See All when there are more.
Your portal's Recommendations pageEvery recommendation, under "Things worth your time, chosen by hand."
One recommendationIts image, title and type, your full description, and a Visit button that opens the resource in a new tab.

With no recommendations to show, the row is left off your portal home.

Two levels of visibility

Visibility works at two levels, like the rest of your portal:

  1. The section: Public & Subscribers, Subscribers Only or Public Only, set in My Portal → Design.
  2. Each recommendation: Public or Private, set on the recommendation in Audience → Recommendations.

If the section is Subscribers Only, visitors don't see any of your recommendations. If the section is open to everyone, a Private recommendation can still appear as a card, but only subscribers get its link. See Members-only recommendations.

Troubleshooting

I added a recommendation but it isn't on my portal

Check that the Recommendations section is switched on in My Portal → Design. A brand-new portal starts with every section off, and publishing something never switches its section on for you.

My section shows for me but not for a visitor

The section is probably set to Subscribers Only. Change it to Public & Subscribers if visitors should see it.

Members say the Visit button doesn't go anywhere useful

The recommendation is probably Private and they aren't subscribed. Make it Public, or invite them to subscribe. Also check that the link itself still works.
